What is Black Watch Tartan?
Originally worn by the Black Watch, one of Scotland’s most historic military regiments, this iconic dark blue and green tartan symbolised strength, discipline, and loyalty.
The regiment, formed in the early 18th century, was tasked with maintaining peace in the Highlands, and its tartan became a mark of Scottish pride and heritage. The regiment was officially formed in 1725 by order of King George I  following the Jacobite uprisings. The British government feared further rebellion from Highland clans who had supported the Stuart claim to the throne, so they raised six independent companies made up of loyal Highland soldiers.
Their name, Black Watch (Am Freiceadan Dubh in Gaelic), is said to have come from the dark-coloured tartan they wore and their role as "watchmen" of the Highlands.
Today, the Black Watch tartan remains one of the most recognisable and versatile tartans, worn with honour worldwide.
