Celebrating 11 Years of Mairead Hume Harris Tweed® Golf Collection – Back to Where It All Began!

This April, we proudly celebrate 11 years of business, our small but mighty Scottish brand born from a love of golf and Harris Tweed®, and inspired by one unforgettable trip to the Isle of Harris.

The story of Mairead Hume begins in 2012, with a bucket-list journey to the breathtaking Outer Hebridean island of Harris. If you’ve never been, put it at the top of your travel list, Trust us; we will feature Harris as a golfing destination soon.

We boarded the ferry from Uig, Isle of Skye, to Tarbert on Harris a stunning 1 hour 40-minute sailing through rugged sea lochs and windswept coastlines. Tarbert, the island’s main port, is also home to the Harris Tweed® Shop, packed full of vibrant bolts of this iconic handwoven cloth.

It was in that very shop, surrounded by tradition, texture, and colour, that our love affair with Harris Tweed® truly began. We purchased a few metres of fabric, with absolutely no idea what we would make, just that we had to bring a piece of Harris Tweed® home with us.

We continued to Scarista, on Harris’s west coast, and teed off at the iconic Isle of Harris Golf Club, often described as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. With sweeping sea views over Scarista Beach, it’s a true raw links course, untouched and unforgettable.

In those days, the green fee was paid via an honesty box a simple envelope dropped through a slot in the clubhouse wall. And yes, this is the same course where Sir Nick Faldo once practiced before the Masters in the 1990s. He famously left an autographed £5 note in the honesty box, now a local legend known as the Faldo Fiver, still competed for annually.

After our golf, we checked into the elegant Scarista House, known for open fires, warm hospitality, incredible food, and rooms overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We enjoyed a few days of spectacular blue sky weather, golf and great hospitality on the Island of Harris and then returned home with fond memories  sun-kissed cheeks, well-fed, and inspired, 2 metres of Harris Tweed® in hand.

From Fabric to Fairway: The Lightbulb Moment

Fast forward to 2014, and a rushed tee time sparked a bright idea. Running late for a Scottish Medal round, Mairead grabbed her golf shoes—and thought, "I really need a shoe bag." That moment, with  Harris Tweed® still folded at the end of the bed, became the start of something special for Mairead.

That weekend, Mairead made her first Harris Tweed® golf shoe bag, and just like that, the Mairead Hume Harris Tweed® Golf Collection was born.

11 Years Later…
