Golfing on the Isle of Islay - Queen of The Hebrides

So, here at Mairead Hume Golf Collection we get to golf some amazing courses throughout the year and a highlight for us this year was The Machrie Links on The Isle of Islay. Islay is an island off the West Coast of Scotland and is known as "Queen of the Hebrides".

It has stunning landscapes, rich history, and world-famous whisky distilleries. However, for golf enthusiasts, Islay offers something equally exceptional.

Machrie Links Golf Course offers unforgettable golfing experience set against the backdrop of the wild and rugged Scottish coastline.

The Machrie  The Machrie1

It is one of the most challenging golf courses in Scotland. Originally designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, the course has undergone several transformations over the years, most notably a complete redesign by DJ Russell in 2014. The result is a beautifully crafted 18-hole links course that seamlessly blends tradition with modern design, offering a challenging yet fair test for golfers of all abilities.

The Machrie Links is known for its natural terrain, where the fairways undulate like the waves of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Each hole offers a unique challenge, with strategically placed bunkers, blind shots, and unpredictable coastal winds that can turn a straightforward hole into a true test of skill. The signature hole, the par 3 -9th hole , epitomises the course’s character with its elevated tee, requiring a precise shot over natural dunes to a well-guarded green.

Beyond the course itself, the 5 Star Machrie Hotel offers luxurious accommodations, dining, and wellness facilities, making it the perfect base for a golfing getaway. Whether you're enjoying a post-round drink with panoramic views of Laggan Bay or indulging in local cuisine at the hotel's restaurant, The Machrie ensures that your golfing trip is memorable both on and off the course.

As a member of Islay Golf Club you can play the course as often as you like and bring guests at a greatly reduced price, As a regular visitor to the island Membership is definitely the way to go for our team.

For those looking to explore further afield, a short ferry ride takes you to the neighbouring island of Jura, home to the Ardfin Golf Course. This exclusive, private course is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets, offering breath taking views and an impeccably maintained course that rivals the best in the world.

Golfing on the Isle of Islay is more than just a sport; it's an immersion into the island's wild beauty, where each round is complemented by the sound of the waves, the call of seabirds, and the ever-present scent of the sea. It makes for thirsty work and you can also pair a game a golf with the many Whisky Distilleries on the island. Make sure your bag is as stunning as the landscape on Islay with our Purple Check Harris Tweed® Golf Set matching Tee Bag and Flat Cap
